Of all the great inventions of planet earth, the ATM is probably one of the ones that has impacted our everyday lives the most - after the car, the phone and the computer.
Before we had them, the only way we could access our own money was by going into a bank and completing a transaction with the help of a bank teller.
This took up a lot of time, and so ATMs have helped us access our own cash quickly, with minimum fuss and without the need for any awkward small talk.
But, even the latest technology needs replacing at some point, so when and how do you upgrade an ATM?
How Old Is Your ATM?
If you're a business owner with an ATM on your premises, you'll probably have some idea of how old your ATM is. Obviously, just because an ATM is old doesn't mean that it's time to upgrade it - but keep an eye on it, keep a logbook of any problems, such as technical issues and have a repair number handy, so you know who to call if the worst happens.
How Reliable is Your ATM?
The best ATMs are the ones that work - funnily enough. Some older models of ATM can be a little slower than others, but on the whole does your ATM work properly? If it has a habit of freezing, not giving out money, chewing up cards and generally being a bit of a hazard, contact the company that made it and find out if they can give you some sort of upgrade.
Remember, words spread about unreliable machines, so if your ATM is badly behaved, people will stop using it.
How Damaged is Your ATM?
If your ATM gets a lot of customers, then it's best to keep up regular repairs and report any issues with the company that manufactured it. However, being popular doesn't mean an ATM will break down, just that you need to pay close attention to any faults that may arise.
However, some ATMs will be targeted by those with less than noble intentions - this could be people trying to steal money, or people that just want to take out their frustrations on something.
Remember that ATMs can be very vulnerable to the very people that they are meant to help, so if your cash machine is in a part of the building that is secluded, think about getting some CCTV cameras on it, so you can make sure everything is OK.
The cameras will also act as a deterrent to anyone who might be looking to cause some trouble.
Whatever the issues you might have with your ATM, with it's age, damage or unreliability, there will come a time when you need to update it, and there are many ATM solutions
that manufacturers can offer you if this happens. So remember, you won't be stuck with the same cash machine forever, but until the time you have to replace the one you have appreciate it while you still have it.
